Have you ever wanted to see Old Faithful and the other wondrous geysers of Yellowstone National Park with your own eyes? If so, we have a fantastic tour for you:
Yellowstone in Winter
February 14-19 (6 days, 5 nights)
Guaranteed departure
To understand how big and powerful Old Faithful is, you cannot rely on a photograph or even a movie. According to Wikipedia,
Eruptions can shoot 3,700 to 8,400 U.S. gallons of boiling water to a height of 106–185 feet lasting from 1.5 to 5 minutes. The average height of an eruption is 145 feet. The highest recorded eruption was 185 feet high. Eruptions often occur about 90 minutes apart, but this interval can range from 45 to 125 minutes on occasion.
Over the years, the length of the interval has increased, which may be the result of earthquakes affecting subterranean water levels. With a margin of error of 10 minutes, Old Faithful will erupt 65 minutes after an eruption lasting less than 2.5 minutes or 91 minutes after an eruption lasting more than 2.5 minutes.
What causes a geyser to erupt on a regular basis? For the answer, we once again turn to Wikipedia:
Generally all geyser field sites are located near active volcanic areas, and the geyser effect is due to the proximity of magma. Generally, surface water works its way down to an average depth of around 6,600 ft where it meets up with hot rocks. The resultant boiling of the pressurized water results in the geyser effect of hot water and steam spraying out of the geyser’s surface vent. About a thousand known geysers exist worldwide, roughly half of which are in Yellowstone National Park, United States.
And on your tour, you are going to see quite a few geysers!
