Interlude Tours: Escorted Vacation to Monticello in Virginia from Indianapolis

We have a wonderfully historical tour coming up that offers the many delights of a Southern spring:

Virginia Spring Kaleidoscope (click here for itinerary)
April 29-May 5, 2010 (8 days, 7 nights)

In this tour, you will be visiting many fascinating historical places, one of which is Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. According to Wikipedia,

Monticello, located in Charlottesville, Virginia, was the estate of Thomas Jefferson, the principal author of the United States Declaration of Independence, third President of the United States, and founder of the University of Virginia.

The house, which Jefferson himself designed, was based on the neoclassical principles described in the books of the Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. It is situated on the summit of an 850-foot-high peak in the Southwest Mountains south of the Rivanna Gap. Its name comes from the Italian “little mountain.”

Monticello, along with the nearby University of Virginia, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

The UNESCO site says,

Both Monticello and the University of Virginia reflect Jefferson’s wide reading of classical and later works on architecture and design and also his careful study of the architecture of late 18th century Europe. As such they illustrate his wide diversity of interests.

Now here’s something really neat. The official Monticello website has a room-by-room virtual tour. The whole site is great and contains a generous amount of information. Have fun exploring that!

The man was truly brilliant, and his home is a masterpiece that you’ll never forget. Why not tour the real thing with an expert guide? You’ll also be visiting the University of Virginia, which is the second part of the above-mentioned UNESCO World Heritage Site.

If you’re interested in the history of our beloved Republic and would like at the same time to drink in the fragrance of beautiful spring flowers, have some great meals and simply relax and rejuvenate yourself as we pamper you… well, that’s what this tour is for! We welcome reservations from Indianapolis, where we are based, or from any location in the United States or Canada.
