One place you’ll be visiting is Virginia City, the city that had its glory days after 1859, when silver was discovered there. Surprisingly, Virginia City is no ghost town but has a population of about 1,500 people.

According to Wikipedia,

Virginia City was the prototype for future frontier mining boom towns, with its industrialization and urbanization. It owed its success to the 1859 discovery of the Comstock Lode. It is laid out in a grid pattern 1,500 feet below the top of Mount Davidson. Most of the buildings are two to three story brick buildings, with the first floors used for saloons and shops. It was the first silver rush town, and the first to intensely apply large-industrial mining methods. After a year in existence, the boomtown had 42 saloons, 42 stores, 6 restaurants, 3 hotels, and 868 dwellings to house a town residency of 2,345. At its height in 1863, the town had 15,000 residents.

According to the official Virgina City website,

Guests can stroll along authentic board sidewalks, view historic churches, scores of 19th century homes, public buildings and quaint cemeteries. They also can visit Old West saloons, shops, museums and restaurants for free or nominal costs, ride on a stagecoach, horse-drawn carriage, trolley or the historic steam-engine Virginia and Truckee Railroad that crosses scenic high desert and landscape dotted with old mines.

This isn’t just a manufactured Old West attraction–this is the real Old West, looking much as it did over 100 years ago!

We have a two-part adventure planned for you in Virginia City. First, we have a driving tour with an experienced guide who will regale you with interesting tidbits about this famed mining town. Second, you’ll have free time to enjoy the city, visiting whatever delights your eye!

On every night of this exquisite Reno vacation, you’ll be back at the glorious Circus Circus hotel and casino for more Reno fun! So why not give it a try? We welcome reservations from Indianapolis, where we are based, or from any location in the United States or Canada.
